For this tutorial, we will create a small game from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>First, we&#8217;ll create a new game:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-248\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/toolbar_loadGame.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Game manager<\/strong> icon on the left of the toolbar to open the Game manager.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/editor_layers_plus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> N<strong>ew game<\/strong> icon to open the New game window.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to choose a name for your game: let&#8217;s try &#8220;Super Shmup&#8221;.<br \/>\nFor this tutorial, we will import assets from an Asset library: Select the &#8220;<strong>2D space assets<\/strong>&#8221; and click on <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1501 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NewGame.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NewGame.jpg 358w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NewGame-300x263.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 85vw, 358px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A new window appears and asks you to choose the orientation of your game. Right now, the list is empty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/editor_layers_plus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>New level<\/strong> button to open the New level window, and choose a name for your level. Let&#8217;s name it &#8220;Level 1&#8221;, and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe new level is now in the list and selected.<\/li>\n<li>Click on <strong>Load<\/strong> to load and edit your first level.<br \/>\nYou are now in the SHMUP Creator editor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>THE PLAYER<\/h5>\n<p>The player is on the left of the screen and already selected. You can see at the right of the screen the player properties.<\/p>\n<p>We will choose another image for the player:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the first <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tab_heart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"22\" \/> tab of the player properties, click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-973\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/icon_playerBox.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>choose<\/strong> icon in the player settings to open the Player Box<\/li>\n<li>Click on the ship on the right to select it, and click on <strong>OK<\/strong>. The player is now a real 2D spaceship!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1387\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_selectPlayer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_selectPlayer.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_selectPlayer-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 85vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s try your game:<\/strong><br \/>\nPress the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-972\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/icon_play.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Play<\/strong> icon in the toolbar to start the game: you can move your ship with a gamepad or the keyboard (WASD to move the ship, Z to shoot by default.).<br \/>\nClick on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-975\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/icon_play2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Play<\/strong> icon again to stop the game (or press the <strong>space bar<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The player moves a little bit too fast:<br \/>\nSelect the player, go in the first tab (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tab_heart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Settings<\/strong>) and modify the <strong>Speed<\/strong> to 60.<br \/>\nTry again the game (this time, try the <strong>space bar<\/strong> to start it): that&#8217;s better!<\/p>\n<h5>BACKGROUNDS<\/h5>\n<p><strong>We are going to add some backgrounds elements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But first, we are going to set up the grid to help us design our level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-250\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/toolbar_prefs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Preferences<\/strong> button, go to the <strong>Grid and Snap<\/strong> tab, and click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-427\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/checkbox.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" \/> <strong>Show grid<\/strong> checkbox (you can also press <strong>G<\/strong> to enable or disable the grid)<\/li>\n<li>Choose 64 for the<strong> Grid spacing<\/strong>, then click <strong>OK<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Also click on the top toolbar <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-316\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/toolbar_snap_grid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Snap objects to the grid<\/strong> icon to enable the snap to grid feature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the left part of the screen is the <strong>Game box<\/strong>. Just move the mouse to the left, and it will open. This is where all the game assets are stored (except for the players).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To open the <strong>Game box<\/strong>: move the mouse to the left border of the screen<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Backgrounds<\/strong> tab<\/li>\n<li>Hover on the background objects until you see the name &#8220;2D_WB<strong>_block01<\/strong>&#8220;, then click<\/li>\n<li>Move your mouse until the block is on the bottom left and snapped to the grid lines (like in the above screenshot), then click again to add it to your level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1389\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_BG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"925\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_BG.jpg 925w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_BG-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_BG-768x597.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>We will duplicate these elements to make a bottom wall:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep the <strong>left Shif<\/strong>t key pressed, then click and drag to the right the background element you just placed. When it&#8217;s on the right of the previous background, release the mouse, then the Shift key: the element is duplicated.<\/li>\n<li>Keep doing this until there are backgrounds elements going to the right, forming a bottom wall (you can keep the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key pressed, and just drag and drop each element):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1391\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/copy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>We are going to create quickly the top wall:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select all the bottom backgrounds: you can either keep the <strong>left Ctrl<\/strong> key pressed then click on all elements to add them one by one to the selection<\/li>\n<li>Or you can use a <strong>rectangle selection<\/strong>: click in the empty space on the top of the first element, keep the mouse button pressed, then drag the mouse to the right bottom of the screen to select all the elements (their outline should turn red)<br \/>\n.when all the background elements are selected, duplicate them to the top of the screen: keep the <strong>left Shift<\/strong> key pressed, then click on the <strong>green arrow<\/strong>, keep pressing and move the mouse to the top of the screen. Release the mouse when the selection is on top of the screen and snap to the grid.<br \/>\n(Clicking on the green arrow <strong>constraints<\/strong> the move to this axis)<\/li>\n<li>You can rotate all the blocks quickly: press <strong>ctrl and R<\/strong>, then do it again to rotate the selection 180 degrees:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/duplicate.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>PLACE ENEMIES AND MAKE THEM MOVE<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s add an enemy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the <strong>Game box<\/strong>, and look for the enemy called <strong>2D_WB_enemy03<\/strong> (the yellow one). Click on the enemy, move the mouse where you want to place it (try on the right top corner of the screen), and click again to validate its position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We will make the enemy move:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that the enemy is selected, then click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-298\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tab_waypoints.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Waypoint<\/strong> icon in the property panel on the right to choose the <strong>Waypoints<\/strong> tab.<br \/>\nWaypoints are points that define a path: the enemy will follow this path, and can do actions at each point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s make a path:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1465\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/newWayPoint.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> icon in the waypoint tab to choose the <strong>New waypoint<\/strong> tool. Move the mouse in the level view and notice the small + arrow.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the screen where you want to <strong>add a waypoint<\/strong>: each time you do, you can see the path getting longer. You can select a waypoint on the screen and move it, and if a waypoint is selected and you create a new one, it will be inserted after the one selected.<\/li>\n<li>Create a few waypoints, like in the above picture, and either click again on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1465\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/newWayPoint.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> icon to stop the <strong>New waypoint tool<\/strong>, or right-click (or press Esc!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1522\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_WP_nwparticle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_WP_nwparticle.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_WP_nwparticle-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_WP_nwparticle-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the second waypoint, like in the above screenshot (the 1st one is in the enemy center), and type 2 in the <strong>wait<\/strong> numeric field.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-437\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/radioButton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" \/> <strong>player direction<\/strong> radio button<br \/>\nThe enemy will move to this waypoint, then wait 2 seconds and aim to the player, then move again to the other waypoints following the path.<br \/>\nIf you want, you can also choose a different speed for each waypoint to make the enemy accelerate or decelerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>ADD TURRETS<\/h5>\n<p>You can navigate the level with the M<strong>ouse wheel<\/strong>, or with the S<strong>croll bar<\/strong> at the window bottom. When you&#8217;ll press <strong>Tab<\/strong>, the level will start at the current scrolling position. If you want to start from the beginning, drag the scroll bar to the left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We will add 2 turrets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Like before, open the Game box, then click on the <strong>2D_WB_turret<\/strong> enemy and place it in your level.<\/li>\n<li>Change the turret orientation: click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-435\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/directionArrows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"22\" \/> top arrow to orient it to the top<\/li>\n<li>You can duplicate the turret (<strong>shift<\/strong> + click and drag) and rotate it to the bottom with the <strong>bottom arrow<\/strong>, then place it on the top wall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end, the level should look like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1407\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_final.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_final.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_final-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_final-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>TEST YOUR LEVEL!<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>You can do it like before (pressing <strong>spacebar<\/strong>, or clicking on <strong>Play<\/strong>), which is a good way to debug your game because all the icons, paths and information are still displayed.<br \/>\nOr you can test your level without the editor: press the <strong>Tab<\/strong> key to start the level. Play, shoot the enemy, look at the enemy trajectory. Press <strong>Tab<\/strong> again to go back to the editor.<br \/>\nAnother cool way to test your level: if a gamepad is plugged to your computer, just press the <strong>Start button<\/strong> to play your game, and <strong>Start <\/strong>again to go back to the editor.<\/p>\n<p>Was the enemy path ok? You can select the waypoints, move them, delete them until you are happy.<br \/>\nEach time, don&#8217;t hesitate to test your level!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1411\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/game_end.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>END THE GAME<\/h5>\n<p>Right now, the level will go forever.<br \/>\nThe level needs a condition to know when it is complete.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the game box, go to the <strong>Gameplay tab<\/strong>, and add an <strong>End of level<\/strong> object. By default, it will end the level as soon as the camera sees it.<br \/>\nYou can move this trigger where you want the level to finish, on the right of the last enemy (Remember: you can use the <strong>Mouse wheel<\/strong> of the bottom <strong>Scroll bar<\/strong> to navigate your level)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1395\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_endOfLevel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_endOfLevel.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_endOfLevel-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 85vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nA more complex End game condition:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will use a trigger to end the level automatically when all the level enemies are dead.<br \/>\nIf you didn&#8217;t do it already, add an <strong>End of level<\/strong> object, then add a <strong>Trigger<\/strong> near the <strong>End of level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We will connect the Trigger to the End of level object:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the right <strong>plug<\/strong> of this <strong>Trigger<\/strong> (the small circle on the right), don&#8217;t release the button and drag to create a link, move it until the mouse touches the left <strong>plug<\/strong> of the <strong>End of level <\/strong>object, then release the button:<br \/>\nNow, the <strong>End of level<\/strong> will be triggered by the T<strong>rigger<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>trigger<\/strong> to select it, and let&#8217;s choose the End of level condition: A<strong>ll level&#8217;s waves are dead<\/strong>, and start the game again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This time, killing all the level enemies will wake-up the trigger, which will in turn wake-up the End of level object.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t forget to save!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1397\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_endOfLevel2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_endOfLevel2.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/tut_endOfLevel2-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 85vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>BUILD YOUR GAME<\/h5>\n<p>When your game is ready, you can build it and create a stand-alone game. You can then distribute it to your friend, or even sell it!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-309\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/toolbar_openGameEditor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"44\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Game editor<\/strong> button to open the Game editor.<\/li>\n<li>On the right of the game editor toolbar, click on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-907\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shmupcreator.com\/doc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/icon_buildGame.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" \/> <strong>Build the stand-alone game <\/strong>button.
